FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF A COLLECTION OF LETTERS ON EGYPT, WHICH BECAME SOMETHING OF A “BIBLE” FOR EUROPEAN TRAVELLERS
Savary, Claude. Letters on Egypt, with a parallel between the manners of its ancient and modern inhabitants […]; and an account of the descent of St Lewis at Damietta: extracted from Joinville, and Arabian authors. Illustrated with maps. By Mr. Savary, author of the Life of Mahomet, and translator of the Coran. In two volumes. London: G.G.J. And J. Robinson, 1786.
2 vol. Contemporary English bindings: full veined calf’s leather, flat spines with elaborated gilt decoration and red labels, white endpapers. First English edition illustrated with 3 large folding plates (little restaured tear in 1 map, occasional light spotting): 2 fold-out maps of the Mediterranean Sea and the Delta of the Nile and 1 plate depicting the inside of the great pyramid. Savary, an Arabic speaker, travelled in Egypt between 1776 to 1779, and is remembered as the first Frenchman to cite Arabic sources in his writings. His book became something of a ‘Bible’ for Europeans travelling in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, although some suggested bitterly he downplayed the harshness of the environment. Joints of 1 vol. lightly split, little scratches on boards, light bruising to ends of the spines, corners lightly rubbed. Overall a sound and internally fresh VG set. A very attractive copy of a work that is genuinely scarce in this First English edition.
