About Emanuel Bowen (1694–1767):
Bowen was a prominent engraver and map seller, serving as engraver to both George II of England and Louis XV of France. From 1714 onwards, he worked in London and became known for producing some of the finest and most appealing maps of his era.

He initially planned a complete County Atlas, but lacking sufficient resources, he partnered with Thomas Kitchin to publish The Large English Atlas. Individual maps were issued starting in 1749, and the Atlas was completed in 1760. Most maps were the largest county maps of the time (approx. 27″ × 20″) and were distinguished by topographical and historical details engraved around blank spaces, making them both informative and visually engaging.

Later, the Atlas was reissued in reduced size. Bowen also produced a book of road maps, inspired by Ogilby, but enhanced with his own historical and heraldic details. His son, Thomas Bowen, continued the craft after Emanuel’s death, creating equally notable maps.
